ITWeb BPM Summit 2009 - People, Process and Technology
The theme of the ITWeb BPM Summit 2009 where Dr Michélle Booysen co-presented with Ms Marietjie Lancaster, Group Executive of
the South African Post Office, was “Creating a strategy to enable a single partnership of people, processes and technology to
drive the successful implementation of BPM in your business”. Says Michélle: “The BPM Summit focused on case studies, which
is a good way for vendors to showcase their tools and techniques, and for clients to talk about the outcomes of these tools and
techniques. ITWeb produced an excellent conference with plenty of examples on how process is key to performance in enterprises.
It is a pity that almost no government and only a handful South African corporates were being represented.
The Pétanque/SAPO presentation explored “the potential role of unstructured processes and content in BPM” which reflected on
the VizPro® project at the Post Office.

Communication in projects – the do’s and don’ts
By MJ Fick
As a project manager, one of the things I enjoy most is the interaction with people - working with project team members, getting
to know the people behind the “worker”, enjoying the humor, the peculiarities and even the traits that can make someone challenging
to work with. However, something has been puzzling me for years now – why are some people scared of the telephone? Or are they scared
of people? Or if not people, what are they scared of?

If you suffer from the “scary phone syndrome” then the good news is that we have great tools like instant messaging. My Skype address
is mj.fick and on Live Messenger you can use my email address mj.fick@petanque-c.com. Feel free to “chat” and let me know if you have other
cures for this nasty disease :)
VizPro® enhanced through Casewise software
We partnered up with Casewise (via Solutions Architecture) to add extra benefit to our VizPro® process maps through the application of V-Modeler
and Corporate Modeler. The Casewise software imports the VizPro® process maps in Corporate Modeler diagrams. Corporate Modeler not only displays
the maps in the VizPro® look and feel, it also captures all data in a central repository, allowing for process simulations and the drawing of reports.

Knowledge Share Dinner
Together with House of Performance, our preferred partner in projects where there’s a need for Lean principles, we hosted a Knowledge Share Dinner
for selected guests from different industries to have a discussion over dinner, and share knowledge and experience regarding performance improvement.
Very interesting insights from all participants on this topic showed that the bottom-line for performance improvement are your people, who have to be
informed and engaged to have their buy-in, which will then need to be underpinned by processes. The evening was enjoyed by all as it offered an
opportunity to have a look outside the “own” organisation, to hear about other businesses, and their challenges and solutions. Thank you to all who made
the evening a success!
